Why Villa San Miguel?
Tegucigalpa was founded by Spanish colonists under the name of Real de Minas de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa on September 29, 1578, on the native settlement of Pech, Tolupans and Twahkas, electing Juan de la Cueva as the first Mayor in 1579.
The Church of Dolores (1735), the Cathedral of San Miguel (1765), the Casa de la Moneda (1780) and the Church of the Immaculate Conception (1788) were some of the first buildings in the city.
Nearly 200 years later, on June 10, 1762, this mining town became la Real Villa de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa y Heredia under the government of Alonso Fernandez de Heredia, the governor of Honduras at the time.
In 1821, Tegucigalpa legally became a city, eliminating all but 'Tegucigalpa' from its name, which comes from the Nahuatl word Taguz-galpa which means, “silver hills”.
Today we honor the history of our capital by bringing the name of Villa de San Miguel back to the Historic District.
